Before I wrote my reply, I did check a source on the history of the internet. Its grandfather, ARPANET, actually did come into existance in 1969 between 2 college labs. It was the '80s before it (and other primitive protocols) were in widespread use. I believe we had it at the NCSU computer lab in '82-'83. You are correct, modern http, etc didn't come into play until the 90's.
