Download Xtreme Labs Speed Test from the app store and check for yourself. I've noticed an increase in speed since Dec/Nov in the Seattle area. It seems ATT added additional backhaul capacity and now I'm routinely seeing over 2,200 Kbps down on 3G. Last summer if I got 1,600 Kbps I was happy.

Its hard to put faith in independent assessments when I know quite a few people here with iphones that have complained about slow network speeds - and this is in Atlanta. They oversold the network and IMO are not doing a very good job at upgrading their infrastructure to keep pace with demand. As long as they have an exclusive sales agreement with Apple they don't need to do a good job.
Regardless, I'll change my opinion when I stop hearing about the complaints.
