It's like a spongy cake usually eaten with custard. The "Spotted" part comes from the fact that it's got raisins or sultanas in it, making it look spotty.

There definately is major cultural differences in entertainment. I find a lot of British comedy completely dreadful. I remember seeing a lot of bad shows and comedians in the 80s and 90s. Times may be changing as the world becomes smaller (faster planes cheaper flights, more access to the internet, etc)
