From a friend in Baton Rouge, local TV stations are still showing the interstates at a standstill with cars trying to flee.? Unfortunately, looks like a lot of folks are going to be caught out in the open as the winds pick over the course of the night.? Supposed to be 75+ MPH by midnight...

yes, around Streets are still packed at near standstill around Baton Rouge. We have a few friends/busienss contacts there, and they just flew out in their helicopter - after nearly 3 hours of waiting for weather to temporarily clear to fly.

landfall is expected 6-7 hours from now, but updates should come within the next 20 minutes from the hurricane hunters.

I hope the superdone will hold out. During last years season one of our Shelters caved in, luckily most people evacuated instead of using it.

Evacuation is mandatory .. not sure why people resort to shelters before they try to leave & get the F*&^ out. some just do not understand the seriousness i guess.

I am still shocked, in a good way but still, that this storm that hit SouthFlorida & is about to hit somewhere up there, did barely any damage here. lights flickered 2-3 times in 48 hours, got about 3" of rain, and very little power outages & downed trees.

KSC, do you have a link to a local news station for news station

23:00 ADVISORY
100 miles away from landfall
165mph winds - CAT5
NO PRESSURE CHANGE
HURRICANE FORCE WIND GUSTS AT COASTS
TORNADO WARNINGS AROUND COAST BETWEEN LS & FL in panhandle

or www.wwltv.com you'll have to do a simple registration then its free acess. unfortunately New Orleans is a very poor city. lots of folks don't have cars and instead use public transit for daily commute. no real way for those folks to leave. superdome better hold up, they are looking at 20,000-30,000 people in there...

kscarrol, glad you made it the hell out of there when you did. I've been thinking about you since I heard the news that it was heading right for New Orleans. Unfortunately, I'm currently out of town and sort of disconnected from news -- and disconnected from the 'net (dial-up  ) -- so I just now read this thread and learned you are safe in Houston.

Hope things work out for you with regard to your house, etc. Either way, at least you are safe!

Watching the hurrican on Fox news I hope everyone gets out in time the forcast is just totally unbelievable we complain over here about 50mph gusts but 165 / 175mph is just inconcievable. Good Luck everyone

ALRIGHT! GOOD NEWS!

Instead of getting hit by a freight train ... now its only a 18 wheeler!
for whatever its worth, right?!

Hurricane has WEAKENED, it is now a CAT4 - 154MPH (1 MPH from CAT5) winds, HOWEVER on shore winds in excess of 100MPH have been recorded already.

also good news ... it is moving faster than it has been in the past 48 hours .. it is now Traveling at ~ 11MPH - GOOD, but could be better.
