HSU subs are outstanding
Those and Vandersteen subs
If you want a sub that you wont replace for something else get Vandersteen.

I went to the store expecting to pay $2000 on a high class sub and left paying $600 for a lower class 12" sub that had deeper tone and longer throw... better for rock/rap, movies... and the annoying neighbors upstairs

That being said, HSU is a good buy. There is also a sub manufacturer in Ohio - SVS - www.svsound.com, that has gotten good reviews. The audioconcept subs (www.audioc.com) have gotten excellent reviews and are very musical and not too expensive. If your budget is high, look at REL and JL Audio.
But, in the end, listen for yourself, as opinions are like "donkey" holes, everybody has one.

I was very happy with my Kef sub, till it broke down . I like the overall sound of the full Kef set, but I was really missing sub bass. Bought a cheap JBL to temporary replace it.
My choice would be a Rel sub. Very small, close enclosure. So the Mrs. will be happy, too!
Rest is Marantz, btw.

Any speakers including subs are tough to call for someone else, especially not knowing their tastes. I had a sunfire sub that would rattle the whole house - you could feel it in the kid's playroom above the garage when the sub was in the basement, but the sub would walk itself across the room and I couldn't get it to blend for music at all. I got a martin logan descent which is less powerful, but will rock the basement and blends incredibly with music. For me, less was more.
