+1 Sad to hear, but neither of those crashes in the video looked that serious. Really strange he died in such a relatively low impact crash. Kin of like 2 of my favorite drivers growing up - Ayrton Senna and Dale Sr, neither crash looked that significant but Senna got a piece of suspension through the helmet and Dale's seatbelt failed. I had seen many drivers walk away from much more traumatic impacts and these 2 legends are gone. May the young Mr. Surtees rest in peace.

This is so heartbreking... John Surtees became father as late as 57 and now has to live through this.

Surtees was probably dead prior to the impact with the barrier when he straightlined the corner. It was the airborne wheel/tire from the previous crash striking his helmet that did him in. If you look at the last few frames, you can see black marks on his helmet.

Senna's death, too, was a freak accident.

It's my understanding that Dale Sr.'s death was arguably preventable had he been wearing the then optional Hans device. IIRC investigations showed that he had hip and collarbone contusions indicating the seatbelts had not failed. The G-forces generated by the 160 mph crash resulted in a basal skull fracture. However, I agree, it did not appear fatal.
