Kids were taken from their parents by the state of New Jersey because of their names...

Yes, the names are ridiculous, and no one in their right mind would name their kids these names, but still, I think state authorities have no justification in separating them from their parents. Are we really a free country?

I don't think it was right to take the kids from the parents no matter how strange the names! BTW, you're from Chicago, and you're complaining about the government in some other state??

They state would have to prove that the parents are harmful to their children or neglectful. Having a German name that many people connect to Nazis is going to cause more problems for the kids growing up then it would for the parents.

I dont know enough about whether the parents were causing harm to their children.

The article says: "....would not comment on any specific case, but she said the state would not remove children from a home simply because of their names."

It is unlikely that they named their child Adolf Hitler and were normal in all other respects....they likely uncovered some issues during their investigation.

IF, and I said IF, the only reason these children were taken away from their parents is due to the fact that they gave them unappealing names, it's completely out of line. You can't separate children from parents just because of poor name choice or the perceived bad judgement for having done so. Last time I checked, the US is still a free country, and whether we approve or not, people can name their children whatever they want. Just ask Moon Unit and Diva Thin Muffin Zappa, Blanket Jackson, Moxie Crimefighter Jillette, Apple Martin-Paltrow, Kyd Duchovny-Leoni, or my favorite, Sage Moonblood Stallone.

I suspect there's more to the story.

I also suspect there's more to the story (and the article itself suggests that there is), but in any event freedom comes with responsibility - and it doesn't look like these particular parents took that too seriously.
