OK, so this professor from Harvard isn't exactly a celebrity, but he's important enough for Obama to mouth off for on his behalf. Had the police come to my house and I refused to show them ID after they'd been sent to respond to a burglary, and I raised enough hell for them to charge me with disorderly conduct, I'd be in jail right now. Well, get a call from the Prez and the charge is dropped.

Hey, I'd be irritated too if I'd just returned jetlagged from an overseas trip and a cop was asking me for my ID to get into my own house. However, once he explained he was sent to investigate a robbery, I would have thanked him for doing his job and protecting my property. OK, so I'm white, right? Easy for me to say? Read up on this officer's background--doesn't sound like a racist to me. Sounds like a guy doing his job who didn't appreciate being screamed at by some Ivory Tower snob.

Agreed, no one should be upset by his arrest. It's always easier to just cooperate with the cops and get it over with, if you're a prick they will show you how much of pricks they can be (I bet it's worse ). This kind of thing is ridiculous. The guy wasn't arrested for being black - he was arrested for being a prick, and that knows no color.

you heard that? could you post a link where you read that or where we could find that info?

There wouldnt of been a problem if he had shown id. What is funny about this is imagine the roll was flipped. Black cop questioning a white person and arrest him. White guy goes to jail....NO CHANCE OBAMA says a word.

White cops do there job and question a black guy and suddenly its flipped around to being racist.

On this one, I have to agree. My brother being a Sheriff's Deputy (Jefferson Co, Colo) can attest to that.

The article I read stated that the police officer asked the professor who he was and he responded that he was the homeowner. The officer then asked for some form of ID and that's when the professor start complaining about racism. I have not read in any of the multiple versions of this story that the professor presented ID and then was arrested.

Obviously only the professor and the officer know the real truth but it sounds to me like an officer responding appropriately in a tense situation.

I'm with CWS530. I had a very similar experience at my house several years ago, alarm tripped, ADT calls the police, I arrive home before the police and am confronted by an officer wanting to know what I was doing there. I responded I live here, he asked for ID which, when I reached for my wallet in my back pocket, he reached for his gun. Presented ID and he then searched the house for me to make there were no intruders left.

Those guys put their lives on the line every day. No one should expect a police officer responding to a reported crime to treat them politely. Simply show the man your ID and then he will move on to handle the rest of the crime scene...

+1 They're just doing what they are trained to do. Cops don't know who you are until they can see and verify your ID.

that woman during the press conference is stupid for asking that quetsion anyway, and should have been punched in the face.

I am so pissed this is getting coverage because of the race thing. I dont care if the guy was purple and the cop was blue, the cop did his job.
