Did anyone see the Portugal / Netherlands match?

4 red cards.

But I think Netherlands deserves the loss, no sign of sportmanship from them

I blame the referee - that guy was a complete idiot. Especially the last red card (2'nd yellow for a portugal player I think in the 91st minute) there was just no need for it.

Personally, I think when the referee starts handing out cards like they are sweets the players get angry about the injustice of it all and the whole game gets very unsportsmanlike.

The 2 incidents where someone really should have been sent off were figo for his headbut and the netherlands player (schneider?) who pushed over the portugese player when the ball wasn't even in play - and the referee just gave them each a yellow card.

Apparently their were only 25 fouls in the match - but 15 yellow cards and 4 reds - a new FIFA record.

Spoils the game really. Still it helps England if Portugal have a limited squad

Having said which - if we beat portugal (which is a very big IF) we probably get Brazil next then a final with Germany

Much as I'd love it I think this may not be Englands year

No sign of sportmanship?! What are u talking about?!
I wonder what sportmanship is in your eyes. Maybe faking you've been hit to get your opponent a red card like Fugo did?
Hopefully you know more about cars than u do about football.

Ok, since we're on the topic of referees...

Help me out here because I don't follow the sport very closely, but I have been watching quite a bit of cup matches. I know that there is a great deal of griping when it comes to calls and to referees in general - not just during the cup. This much I know. I know it is just part of the sport, and have heard fans griping incessantly for years.

I was in Milan recently during the time when the referee scandal was being reported on daily, and my Italian coworkers were keeping track of it very closely.

My point to all this is - I'm starting to wonder if this isn't the most poorly officiated sport out of all the other major world sports. FIFA's refusal to implement any form of electronic oversight only makes me more suspicious.

Am I getting the wrong impression? Have I simply not followed the sport for a long enough time?

Someone help me out here.

It's a real tradition in football that the referee's decision is absolute and final. There's been some technical advance in that there is now a fourth official (who assists in terms of establishing injury time) and the ref is now able to converse with the linesmen / 4th official by radio.

The electronic oversight bit is something that I think will always be resisted in football cause the flow of the game requires an immediate decision to be made and that everyone involved with it abides by it.

Historically if the referee made a bad decision - you would say he was an idiot - but everyone would abide by it. Sometimes a bad decision would go in your favour - sometimes not.

Problem is now that FIFA are heavily regulating the referees and they seem to be under pressure to produce yellow cards and award free kicks where traditionally they would have applied more judgement and allowed the game to flow. In this world cup there have been several free kicks awarded where the team winning the kick would probably have been better of playing the advantage - ie keeping the ball in play.

Don't know if you remember this guy from previous world cups:

Pierluigi Collina got a reputation for being a serious no-nonsense referee, but as I remember it he gave out very few cards - preferring to give players respect and allow play to flow.

Unfortunately in this world cup the refs are getting too involved IMO and are influencing the outcome of matches in an unacceptable way. If this is the way they are going to run things then ultimately we will have disjointed play, bad feeling and a need to rely on electronic stuff - which would be a shame.

The game has become quicker and more muscular than it used to be. Hence it is all the more difficult for referees to stay on top of it. Multiple referees, electronic help and basketball-like actual time, are, IMO, necessary solutions, but I'm afraid FIFA and the other governing bodies are hardly prepared to give up the power that stems from designating complacent referees (the 2002 world cup in korea being the perfect example with the outrageous designations of referees that paved the way to the host country's 4th place)
