I was just watching Vicky Butler Henderson in a California racing against Jeremy Clarkson in an Aston. The Cali looks OK (even better when Vicky's in it). It's no 599 though.
Actually I quite like the California too. It's arguably not as beautiful as some others in the range, but it seems to be a fabulous car and it's perfect for its intended market (high end, very sporty GT). It essentially looks, goes, sounds and stops much like any other modern Ferrari - and that's fine by me.

+1

And I would argue m630's comment that folding hard tops are fads. They provide more structural rigidity and safety than fabric tops and as improvements are made in the industry and costs are reduced, I can see more manufacturers going in this direction. I mean, why on earth would you want a soft top over a hard top if you can have the latter?

in LaLa land, why would u need any roof??? i just dont think they are proper for a Fcar, I dont care that they are used on Z4s or anything, but the added weight is unnessary and they cannot have the same performance and handling attributes as a pure coupe, so if Ferrari is only offering one type of model, ie folding roof only, well the car is not the best at what it can be

You could argue that point to the extreme though - why do they have leather, a radio and air-con. Without them the car would handle better so with them the car is not the best at what it can be. Most Ferrari's don't spend all their time on race tracks so they don't need to be all they can be to the extreme. You need to add the luxuries to make them sell to the masses, and a folding metal roof brings more customers to their doors. Personally I think they're great. It's one feature of the SL55 that I've always liked.

Most of us agree though that covering a car in gold is definitely too far

Looks like a Christmas ornament, not a real car. Someone out there likes it, but that's a matter of taste - I hate Rolexes because of their penchant for gold and "bling", instead I prefer Breitlings for their form and function without being ostentacious.
