I have read today that the E60 only managed a 4 star rating overall in their tests. This could have been even lower but Euro NCAP allowed the frontal, side and pole tests to be taken again after BMW made improvements to the cars steering column, footrest, door trim latch, airbags and software. Were these improvements before or after production and delivery to customers started.

There are lots of threads regarding this test.
Do a search and you'll find it. (I think it's in the news section/forum).
Those improvements were just recently made and cars built before don't have those improvements and will not get them.
According to BMW ALL E60's are 4-star cars, since there is only this one official result. Everything else is inofficial.
In fact, the most of us here are driving around in a 3-star E60.
Just check the other threads, there is lots of opinions there...
