Brett, even I think you would agree that an award for courage is innapropriate...

The Eagles players who made that decision obviously have taken too many shots to the head.

your right hes an asshole, and shouldnt get awards. I think allowing him to return to his job is enough and all he should have gotten. Rewards are for good people who make good decisions, not idiots who are court ordered to do community service.

IN DEFENSE OF VICK: SAY WHAT????

While walking down the street around the time that Michael Vick was released from prison, a college age kid walked up to me and handed me a glossy PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) brochure. He said, ‟Vick?s not the only bad guy. If you ate a burger recently you?re a murderer of animals too.?

Initially, I thought this statement was preposterous. There?s a big difference between a man who forces a dog to participate in the bloody and illegal sport of dogfighting and a guy who enjoys a Big Mac occasionally. But, I can imagine a future animal friendly society that may be as appalled by our present civilization?s harvesting of animal livestock to sustain ourselves as many of us are presently revolted by the once respected, time honored traditions of bullfighting, dogfighting and cockfighting.

Personally, I think Michael Vick was justifiably prosecuted and publicly vilified for his actions, especially since he was told that dogfighting was unacceptable and even specifically warned by many of his peers in and out of the league.

Nevertheless, considering what Michael Vick has accomplished this season, I believe, from their perspective, the Eagles players picked the right man. The Eagles players were under no obligation to pick some Ken doll poster boy community service hero to satisfy the media?s insatiable appetite for a phoney spokesperson to enhance advertising dollars. This time, they picked someone who they could truly identify with, warts and all. Michael Vick went from being a celebrated multi-millionaire starting quarterback in the NFL to being a notorious publicly hated broke inmate at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. Against all odds, he got himself back into physical and mental condition to handle the most pressure filled position in the game. When the Eagles players observed Vick overcome the daily indignities, the vulgar chants, the self-doubts, the abysmal fear that he?ll never be near to what he was, and the remorse that comes with knowing that he did it to himself, he became their obvious choice for the award. Vick had overcome many of the things they?ve only experienced in their wildest nightmares.

The Yahoo journalist Chase is a bit confused concerning courage and cowardice. Vick?s conduct was unrelated to cowardice. It was based upon his arrogance, his belief that he was above the law and his ignorance that dogfighting is extremely cruel to animals, thus immoral. Vick?s no more a coward for dogfighting than I?m a pussy passing over a soybean burger for a junior cheeseburger because I think it taste better.

One doesn?t have to be nice or likeable to be courageous or deserving of an award. Michael Vick was not, and now may still not be a role model. But it took extreme courage for him to come back into the league and play at a professional level. It?s easy to show courage when everyone?s in your corner. Try it when most owners don?t want you on their team, most so called fans despise you, and you?re filled with bouts of depression and self-doubt.

Often, the most difficult setbacks to recover from are the ones we created ourselves.
