D5000 maybe newer but AFAIK it's not as replacement of D90.
D5000 is the newer version of the D60.
The D90 will run you about 1k bucks if not more and i don't they they have replaced it yet. If your willing to spend the money get the D90 and find a friend with lenses to try out! If you get the D90 it has a built in motor for autofocus so you can buy the older lenses that will save you a ton of money!
And for full frame cameras the cheapest one i know of is the D700 and the body alone will set you back 2k, full frame is not a reqirement but would be nice.

Another D90 here, great camera and more than i need but hope to grow into it. Added a external flash (sb-600) which is awesome for people and family gatherings. Camera came with 2 "cheapo" nikon lenses that have done fine for me but shopping for a new one simply for convienence, 18-200.
Some interesting photo info at www.kenrockwell.com
Did a fair amount of b&w shooting and developing when i was younger, the lack of control and lag pushed me from a digital point and shoot to a dlsr, been very happy with the move.......other than the fact the dslr won't fit in my pocket.

It does. It has an action mode, but I feel the quality of the image suffers in this mode, especially if I'm indoors. The lens on the D90 is definitely a telephoto lens -- not sure who makes it. I take pix inside and out. There are just certain faces that my daughter makes and when I try and grab it on the G10, I'm too late.
Maybe I'll just sell you my G10 and get one of these DSLR's.

I have a Nikon D90 and the results are great... I have a few "decent" lenses including Nikkor F2.8 range which are faster and quality wise is far more superior to the kit lenses you get.
It is more than enough, and unless you want to play with full frame then I can thoroughly recommend it.

Another D90 owner here, C. Fantastic camera. We're taking some tremendous shots with the D90, I highly recommend it.

Here is a great D5000 review:
Some shots from a race I attended few weeks back. These pics are just with the kit lens, upgrading lenses soon.

So the choice has come down to the D90 or the D5000.

Not even, the D90 hands down is better than the D5000. The D90 had a built in Autofocus motor so you can use older CHEAPER (in price, not quality) lens.

The D90 sits higher in Nikon's line up than the D5000 (the D5000 effectively replaced the D60, not the D90). It's going to run you a couple of hundred bucks or so extra, at list price the D90 will run you another $270 or so, but it is a better camera.
