Initially, the Blu-Ray spec seemed to indicate that it could hold more data per disc, but both camps are making denser media, or have plans to do so. Regardless, even with heaping extras it is hard to fill the space available with either format.
Some Industry considerations include or included:
-Cost to manufacture, which is higher for Blu-Ray. HD-DVD was designed as a retool to the standard DVD fabrication processes.
-Studio backing, which HD-DVD is currently winning.
-Hardware player manufacturing support. HD-DVD always had broader support and still does.
-Security of media. Both have failed utterly already, so this is a non-issue.
-Mandatory codecs. HD-DVD -mandates- the use of a lossless audio soundtrack. Blu-Ray does not. This is a huge win for HD-DVD.
Neither -should- win. Instead, expect the proliferation of combo players like the LG unit that was announced at CES. Then it will be just like SACD and DVD-Audio, you just simply buy one player that allows you to buy and watch "all" media.
If you stop to think about it, the market has spoken. HD encoded media was available on the Internet -before- the release of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD (and even DVHS) so a downloadable distribution model is clearly where the market wants to go. We no longer need to buy disks to watch movies, just as we don't need to buy software discs to purchase and use software. This ugly format war is about convincing people they need to buy expensive players and otherwise-worthless plastic donuts. Consumers don't need to finance this part of these companies' bottom lines anymore.
