Sixcard's description of our system as a republic is dead on. We are a representative democracy -- not a direct one. There are indeed good reasons for that because voters want tons of government services but are not willing to foot the bil for them. That is why California's government by ballot initiative is proving to be such a disaster for the state.

The key to the success of a republic like ours, which is a representative democracy rather than a direct democracy is the system of checks and balances.

I love visting Cali. I've got both business and friends here. I think that the state has great natural beauty and a lot to do. But the government is being crippled by the stupid idea of government by referendum.
