I've been to Detroit too ( it IS Gotham City from Batman), but Compton is worse. It's 8 mile without the charm.
Also lived in Cincinnati. Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati is absolutely terrible. You name it, it has it: crime, murder, drugs, hookers. You are told not to even stop at stop lights driving through it.

Compton is, well, different. Don't go there if you have no need to, nothing really to see anyway other than drug dealers and hookers. There are places just as bad, but I wouldn't recommend going to those places either (Gary, IN and East St.Louis to name 2, been to both and couldn't wait to leave). Compton is like that, if you're looking to see "how the other half lives" might I suggest watching some old NWA videos?
