Well I don't know if some less than honest journo is responsible but I heard that Chris Bangle has been offered a lucrative deal with the the VAG Group.
The rationale being to inject some much needed design inspiration, the existing model line up being rather conserative and boring. Ironic really, at BMW he has taken a hell of a bashing, but look at other manufacturers and you've got to think they've lost the plot.
The E class has a Maylasian/Hyundai appearence, the new A6 is another variation on the autohaus theme, with a hole in the grill, Jaguar is harking back to the 1960's and Lexus is an amalgam of the lot. Where is the fresh design direction. You can find it in Renault (like it or loathe it) but not much place else, except for BMW.
