I was at a wedding today which was attended by many Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Just curious as to which USA law enforcement category a Mounted Policeman would be similar to? City police; state patrol; DEA; etc.

Interesting question! Given what seems to be a broad range of crimes covered by the Mounted Police, they strike me as a sort of national version of our State Police/Patrol. Curious to here from our Canadian members...

Canadian Mounted Police are per Province in Canada which would be comparable to States here in the US, so My guess would be State Police.

Here in Pittsburgh, the city has it's own mounted police division. They're not out every day but they do come out downtown [quite often, I might add] when there are things like championship victory celebrations for our sports teams, etc.

Similarly, the city has a division of Harley-riding motorcycle cops. That may not sound too strange but these guys ride even in sub-zero degree winter weather! I think they've been active for like 100 years too so they have a grand history as well. The bikes used to have side-cars but they never seemed to have any passengers aboard. Here's a couple photos I found of some winter riding:

Three degrees Fahrenheit:

A little snow won't bother anyone:

Many more photos and information about Pittsburgh's motorcycle unit can be found here:

Back to horses, I think the Pennsylvania State Police also have a mounted division -- again, it's not like Canada but I suppose in the US, each department, whether it be local or state, can have a mounted division if they choose...

Watch Bullwinkle; that show will give you the correct answer. I have not seen it since 1963 or so.

Probably because they can only find a limited number of guys willing to drive around in snow and/or sub-zero temperatures on a motorcycle. With all due respect to the boys in blue, this looks more like rookie hazing. What's the advantage anyway? Are they parking enforcement? Looks like they'd be too frozen to chase anybody down after a pursuit. Idea: Try a car.
