C, buy a PS3. it comes with Blu-Ray
Yeah, I think I'm going to go this route. What I also like about the PS3, unlike the BSP-300 Sony Blu-Ray player, is that it has an ethernet port for firmware updates. Since the technology is so new, I like this feature. The Toshiba has it, but again, I don't think the 1080p resolution is as good as Blu-Ray. I also believe the PS3 will play TrueHD Audio, which is key with my amp (Marantz w/ HDMI).

Well, that settles it...I'm returning the Toshiba tomorrow and will be buying a PS3. Blu-Ray better win this war or I'm going to be pissed. Hahahaha. Thanks for the responses guys (Andy, John, Thomas). Appreciate it!

Let me know your login name when you have registered your PS3, so that I can challenge you on some online game. And hey, we are in the 21st century, you don't need an ethernet port for firmware updates, you can use the wireless LAN to get the updates.

Good timing, the PS3 price has dropped just a couple of weeks ago

+2 Calton once you get online via your PS3... It's on man! Screen name 'Team RAZR' (Playstation Network & Xbox Live)

So I purchased the Toshiba HD-A20 DVD player yesterday and came home to watch the Last Samurai in 1080p (My TV is the Sony KDS-R60XBR2 60" Grand Wega SXRD LCD). The picture was amazing, as was the sound, but I'm questioning whether I should have gone Blu-Ray instead...

So, my question is this...

Should I stick with this HD DVD player or go with Blu-Ray? I visited BlockBuster last night and couldn't help but notice how many more titles were available on Blu-Ray, over HD DVD. Furthermore, knowing that I have a Sony TV, I can't help but think that Blu-Ray will look better on my Sony TV.

I paid $319 for this new HD DVD player and the HD-A20 is a brand new model by Toshiba.

What do you guys think? Should I stick with this player or return it and go with Blu-Ray?
now that you got the HD I would keep it but you will need both cos the films will not be in both formats so you will need a player which as HD and Blu-Ray.
LG has 1 out in HK and it cost too much about $1000us.
I am going to wait until other company bring more out then I get 1 but right now not worth it.
Your HD player is a very good price, in HK the cheepest is about $600us

The HD format in 1080p is not as good as Blu-Ray. It's noticeable. I'm returning this player today. The LG dual player is too much money. I'm not spending $1000 on a player when one of the formats will be obsolete in due time.

I will still what until the 3rd lot is out which I think will be about 2 years time no rush to go out and get 1 right now.
When China starts to make them then I will get 1. BUT not the China brand 1s

Assuming that the video quality of HDDVD and Blu-Ray are comparable, the main question would regard title selection. I had read somewhere that most of the movie studios are aligned with the Blu-Ray format. If that's the case, I would think a majority of titles would be in Blu-Ray format only - making it the format to go with.

I'm also interested in this question, since I'm looking to get one or the other as well.

I like how this forum is a knowledge base for things other than our 5 series. Awesome.

Read this... you're likely seeing ugly 1080i to 1080p deinterlacing from HD-DVD to your 1080p-native display...

Also, that LG is limited in how it does some things - best to wait. Samsung has announced a multi-format player as well.

Try to get a player that has one of the HQV chipsets - either REON or REALTA. The latter is better than the former. Some new HDMI 1.3 receivers have these chipsets as well. They do perfect HD scaling/deinterlacing. The same company sells Blu-Ray and HD-DVD test discs to see how well (or rather how poorly) your current hardware is really doing.
