NEW YORK?Progressive Corp. last week introduced a new type of car insurance that offers a discount to policyholders based on real-time information about how and when they drive.
Such technology could herald a new era in auto insurance, and Progressive, which took more than a decade to hone the product, now has a leg up on its U.S. rivals, industry analysts said. But in the cutthroat world of auto-insurance, such competitive advantages have rarely lasted for long.

My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny.
2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
I wouldn't volunteer for it, but I have a feeling that within a year the big insurance lobbyists will buy, ahem, convince our politicians to make it mandatory since driving is a privilege and not a right, ie. the current black boxes in cars that we have no power to disconnect.
