My company does a lot of work for the Festival of Speed and from first hand knowledge the only thing keeping the cars on the track should they have a mishap are logs drilled into the ground the spectator side of the bails.
They are quite large bails and with quite large logs every 1m drilled in about 1m or so, so very little is going to go through even at speed!
It's a great event and worth a visit
