$876 here in Alabama...
In Virginia, registration is modest - about $30 per year.

But, you get to pay a yearly personal property tax based on the blue book value of the car. The tax rate in my county is 4.57% per year of the vehicle value. You get a reduction of 70% of the tax for the first $20,000 of the value. Just got the latest bills. My 2006 530xi is $570 and my wife's 2009 X5 3.0i is $1,200.

Two unfamiliar terms in here for me - TABS, never heard that. Also, DFL.
That kind of increase in what I assume are taxes or registration fee doesn't sound like a Pawlenty move, especially with his Presidential ambitions.
Almost without exception, tax increases are Democrat enactments (except for a Bush).
Also, don't quite get the outrage over paying more for services, particularly in uber liberal Minnesota.
Maybe we are reaching a turning point!!!

Here in taxachusetts, we have a registration fee, title fee and an annual excise tax based on value that is a killer the first year but is chump change is you drive an old car, its sort of the "anti clunker" incentive (keep your old car and save on taxes). But the killer started yesterday, MA raised its sales tax to 6.25%, one of the highest in the country. Don't think I will be changing cars anytime soon...
6.25%....nebraska was around that mark 8 years ago. We are at 7% now

My Ride: 2004 Lexus RX330. Looking to buy 2010 535i.

You can complain to Garrison Keiler(who will have no sympathy for you rich guys able to afford a BMW), or you can move to Texas. We have no state income taxes here, and the cost to register my 535i is around $74 (if I remember correctly what I paid 6 weeks ago).

No wisecracks about us Texans, please. I'm an ex-Yankee (born and bred in Boston, which is believed by those folks in Taxachusetts to be the "Hub" of the universe [really, no kidding], and educated in MA and in NY). Texas is full of ex-Yankees. Y'all come on down. I'll take you to Sonny Bryan's for the world's best barbecue (I'm treating), and we can show off our cars and talk shop.

Also, in Texas there are no speed limits on BMW's. Unlike every other make of auto, BMW's are allowed to drive up to whatever limit the car is electronically governed, just like on the Autobahn. The police just wave and smile wistfully, knowing that they can't catch us and wishing that they had what we got. But, the law is the law. We get to carry (concealed) handguns and drive BMW's as fast as we want.* So, come on down.

kpp

* (O.K., so I learned to tell tall tales. But this really is an easy place to live and raise a family, and if the heat don kill ya it'll make ya stronger. Besides, as I've learned, my 535 has killer A/C, so I don't mind the 110 degree summer heat. Besides, it's a dry heat (heh, heh, heh). And, I've found a dealer -- from whom I bought my first BMW 6 weeks ago -- who's service-oriented and customer friendly. You've got nothing to lose but your chains - and thermal underwear you Minnesotans, and other Yankees. Throw off your snow tires or chains, abandon your high taxation states and drive your hot ultimate machines down here. I did it in 1975 and haven't looked back. I'm happy to welcome new immigrants. Just let me know you're on your way.

Tabs = yearly vehicle registration sticker displayed on license plate. Cost of tabs is now based on MSRP of vehicle.

In MN the Democratic Party is the DFL. DFL = Democratic Farmer Labor Party
