Dunno how much it is in The Chi. Howitzer said $79 and that seems pretty low compared to your $700.

they better rate the cost of registration by cars in a state. NYS has many cars. Crossing fingers.

Welcome to UK levels of Car tax!!

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ownin...hicle/DG_172916

It's all done on emissions here.

If it's over 255 Co (gm/km), you're looking at ?950 to tax your car (each year)...that's around $1600 USD.

I don't think our american friends are talking about tax here. I think they're talking about how much it costs just to register your car. It's something you don't have to do in the UK. The license plate stays with the car no matter where it lives in the UK or who owns it. In America, if you buy/sell the car, or even just move to a different state, you have to re-register it and get new plates. That's what they're talking about - I have no idea why they're referring to "tabs" though. That sounds a bit weird.

Here in Germany, I have to re-register even if I move to a different town in the same state, because the town name makes up part of the license number. You'll all have seen those "S" Mercedes and Porsche prototypes from Stuttgart and more importantly the "M" prototypes from Munich (I forget which manufacturer it is that's based there ). At least it's cheap though. You can do the paperwork, get your plates, and even choose a personalised number and it all comes in at under $100.

The term "tab" can mean either a sticker placed on the license plate or a sticker placed on the inside of windshield.

I have my vehicle registration renewal notice in front of me now for a 2004 545i. Total cost is $62.80 with the addition of another $1.00 for mailing it in. I live in Texas by the way.

Here in taxachusetts, we have a registration fee, title fee and an annual excise tax based on value that is a killer the first year but is chump change is you drive an old car, its sort of the "anti clunker" incentive (keep your old car and save on taxes). But the killer started yesterday, MA raised its sales tax to 6.25%, one of the highest in the country. Don't think I will be changing cars anytime soon...
