No, if I understand it correctly, an AVR unit WILL enable the video source to the idrive, just like an ACM. you will still need to provide the video like an external dvd player/video ipod/video files on usb etc. but once installed AVR unit along with a GW500, it will enable video on the idrive.
I want to make sure. Anyone want to test it out?

When I had contacted Dension they confirmed that you can put Video on the iDrive screen but for that you must have the BMW TV option coded in. They use the same method as the other MOST Interfaces available i.e. fool the car to think that the OEM Tuner is connected and use that route to put video on to the screen.
The AVR will annouce itself as the BMW TV so if you find a friendly dealer they should be able to code it in, ofcourse if they say TV is not a US option and hence cannot be coded then you are stuffed.

I think you are actually set as of now, members nigxdoof & nelson29 can't play MP3 on their head unit and their car build around the same as yours, since you have CDC already no dealer re-programm required.
My 2004 545i doesn't have nav, and not MP3-enabled. But if all I need is a CDC (CD-changer?), then I might be set for this mod.
-thanks

You dont need the cdc. your car will need to be coded for the ipod retrofit.
Or is the iPod re-coding inevitable and is a must as part of this process? If so, then I'll have to fork-out at least another $190 to the dealer, correct?

I'm trying to avoid the iPod re-coding retrofit, hence my question (to Mike) if the simple availability of CDC will allow me to use the Denison Gateway 500 with my iPod/iPhone etc.

Hey Frank,
I think you'll need to recode your car since you dont have MP3 enabled. I'm probably 95% sure u have to.
Regardless, this is a great module and well worth it if purchased.
