i don't see it like this: is a child seat included in the lease payments? why should you subsidize the lease companies buy not wearing out the leather by using the child seat? I assume the child seat is part of the law.
Bottom line; how much do the winter wheels cost? let us say 1500 pounds. you use them for 3 years and when you return your car, you can sell the wheels for say 750 pounds - this amounts to 750 pounds of total cost.

They are not used to snowy winters.
In the Nordic countries it's a must to have two sets of tires, all cars all sold with two sets.
But one can also only buy winter tires without the rims and change them. A huge save.
I.e. BBC has made TV-shows of how the Finnish airports manage with a meter of snow. Not a problem here.
Finland is now a SnowHow county

Not sure I understand the comparison with the child seat. However, you are preaching to the converted about winter tyres - I have them and would get them even if I still had a lease car.
Your numbers look attractive but probably not realistic. Most company car users drive over 20,000 miles a year and will get though about 4 sets of tyres over a 3 year lease. If 5/12 of this is on winter tyres (Nov to March), you will be paying just under half of this. Plus winter tyres should be replaced at 4mm. At nearly £200 a tyre it soon adds up. I'd also be suprised if you managed to retain 50% of the wheel value after 3 years...Bear in mind that you/your company have already paid for the tyres and you are actually paying twice. The lease companies need to wake up or one of them should break with the pack...

I seem to remember old Jag's having a warning sign on the rear bumper alerting people that disc brakes were fitted and to stay back

I've been really pleased with my 520dA, a great drive and a smashing place to be.
Problem is we have now had around 10" of snow and my world has become a very different place, full of sideways driving at best and no traction at worst. I really can't justify the investment of winter tyres (based in se england) and was wondering if anyone had any tips.
my last rwd car was an escort 1.6 mexico, things have moved on since then on all fronts other than winter driving ability

You have a nice car, and you should go out and buy a good pair of winter tires. During winter season you won't put any wear on the summer tires, that way you are atleast making up for a part of the investment...
Edit: Now I saw that rubber is included in your lease. It's sad that a "good" thing like that is actually resulting counterproductive and unsafe.
