The E39 was a rock.
Really? In Europe the E39 isn't really regarded as bullet proof, to say the least. Here, the sentiment is more that the E34 was the last solid built 5-series BMW.

Thats a shame I have to say I owned to E39s and they were both very well built without any problems at all. I do speak only to my own personal experiences with the cars..

We have an E39 in our family with 109,000 miles and except for a minor AC issue that was covered while under warranty, and a (stupid, too cheap) plastic part that broke on both seat recliners within 4 months of each other, we haven't had any issues at all except for routine maintenance. I knew the water pump goes on these cars around 100k, so I had it replaced with a better quality one at 90k.

It's always been kept garaged and well cared for so looks close to brand new. Every time I drive it, which is only maybe 2 or 3 times a year, I always think, "Wow, this thing still feels as tight and solid as the day we bought it." Seriously, it's one of the best cars I ever owned.

If one plans to keep the car for 5+ years, I would stay away from the 1st year production vehicles from any manufacturer, including Honda. There are just many things that could go wrong, humans and machines are not perfect, it's best to wait.

Reading Mike Miller's columns on Roundel, I know that BMWs are and will always be more expensive to maintain. My biggest concern is the automatic transmission, and the computer / electronics that control the car.

Being a recent car, E60 in the U.S. has mostly been covered under warranty and maintenance agreements. We will see more data about its reliability in the upcoming months.

Same general experience I have had with my E60 as I stated in an earlier post in the thread. I can count on one hand the number of times the car has been in the shop during the last 5 years of ownership. Just turned 36K miles, and garaged (heated) all the time. My battery is even okay, and the car often sits a week without being driven due to my travel schedule.

I intend to keep it for a loooong time. It's a great car.
