Professional Nav - Playing video from USB

My Ride: 525D MSport 03/2005
I have recently (July 2011) bought and taken delivery of a 520d SE with Professional Navigation in the UK.
I've got it playing DVDs from an actual DVD disks but was wondering if it is possible to play movie (DVDs, avi, mpeg4 etc) from either of the two USB slots in the glovebox or the center console. I've been able to read MP3 from an 8GB Flask disk in both locations but cannot browse to find the movie files on the USBs. I've ordered a 32GB Flash so will let you all know how that goes as regards compatibility... I'm not sure what the maximum capacity is for the USB.

Do you think that such updates will be user installable or will we still have to take the car to the dealer?
Most electronics these days can download over the air or get an update via a file on a USB which has been downloaded from the manufacturers website, wonder what the process is for the newer BMWs.
