Why would it favor the F10? If anything, the E-Class got a year's head start in sales.

Also, the X-Drive F10 was only made available this fall.

Right, but we're talking here about prior month sales, not sales from launch. There's still a lot more novelty value with the F10 and of course considerably more media buzz about the newer car. At this point in the F10's lifecycle, there should also be a solid core of returning lessees who will have timed and planned their E60 acquisition to let them replace their car shortly after the new F10 was released. The E Class is also much more likely to be susceptible to perceived as the older and thus less attractive car.

Either way, both cars seem to be holding their own and doing well - it's all good.

This is so tru.

A fact about US 2010 car sales is:
BMW Group 266 069 sold cars, Daimler AG "only" 230 934.
Facts from the North American International Auto Show.

Over here we have a interesting case about sold M-B E's and BMW F10/11's.
In Finland almost all sold M-B E's are taxis (also at lot of C models),
but luckily BMW don't promote this phenomenon, do to hard
pressure from the F10/11 owners.
Who the he*l would like to drive a taxi?

F10 sales have been running neck-and-neck with the E-Class across the past 4 months, seperated by fewer than 100 units out of combined sales of 37,000. (I'm comparing F10 not including GTs and E-Class not including coupes). The E60 did not perform as well at this same stage of its introduction - it got clobbered by about 2,800 units during this same 4 month window.

Meanwhile, BMW sold 626 7-series in January to MB's 800 S-Class sedeans and Audi's 450 A8s. Audi is the gainer here as they had a hard time selling 50 units one year ago. Porsche sold 533 of the Panamera. Oh, and Hyundai sold 254 of the new Equus.

By the way .. Motor Trend just rated the 740i #1 ahead of the Panamera and A8!

Whats' Hot
Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ both had huge gains (700%+) over the same month last year
Jeep Grand Cherokee +130%
VW Golf +109%
BMW 5 series +78%
Honda CR-V +69%

What's Not
VW Beetle -87%
Toyota RAV4 -53%
BMW 7 series -52%
Jaguar XF -50%
Ford Mustang -33%
Lexus LS -33%

Also of note:
Chevy Volt 321 untis
Honda CR-Z 894
Nissan Leaf 87

Perhaps you ought to look at it another way. If I were a fleet owner or taxi driver and relied on my cars for a living, I'd probably be reluctant to choose a modern BMW. The reliability simply isn't there. I am confident that the fact you don't see modern BMW's as taxis has absolutely nothing to do with this supposed "pressure" from BMW owners, that simply isn't happening. It has everything to do with reliability, comfort, and return on investment. Fleet owners will always choose their cars for very different reasons than those that lead us to buy BMWs.

The 6er is a different model in name only. It is essentially a 2 door 5er. According to the stats, the numbers sold barely makes a mark on BMW's overall sales.

not to stray too much off, but there is no comparison of the 5er and the 6er today, it is in no way a 2 door 5er, they couldnt be more different vehicles in nearly every way. The 6er is a halo car, its their top range as noted more than once by the top of BMW, it would be more compared to the CL in MB terms for comparisons...

Must concede one point to you. The F10 is canbalizing the 7. BTW I had thought S class sales were miles higher and there are not. Is there much profit in the flagships?
