I suppose things are of to a good start for the F10 from a sales standpoint. In it's first full month of sales, it beat the E60's sales from the same period a year ago. Clearly, this should make some folks happy and some folks not so happy...

BMW Group U.S. Reports July 2010 Sales
08/03/2010 Press Release

Woodcliff Lake, NJ ? August 3, 2010... The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported July sales of 23,390 vehicles, an increase of 10.1 percent from the 21,253 vehicles sold last year. Year-to-date, the BMW Group also reported a sales volume of 144,975 vehicles, up 6.8 percent from the 135,701 units sold last year.

?We?re delighted to have the all-new 5 Series in the market, and just as we had hoped, the first full month results with this new car have been very positive,? said Jim O?Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. ?Current and new customers love it, our dealers would like to have even more, and what we?ve also seen is strong market demand once again for a vehicle with the size, performance and flexibility of our X5.?

BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 16.4 percent for a total of 19,064 vehicles from the 16,381 units sold last year. Year-to-date, BMW sales were up 8.9 percent to 119,696 vehicles from the 109,944 units sold last year.

In July, the best performing vehicles included the 1 Series, up 53.3 percent to 1,392 and the X5, up 50.5 percent to 2,815. The 5 Series performed very well with an increase of 9.6 percent to 2, 724.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles
Sales of BMW?s used vehicles (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) increased 11.6 percent to 15,075 vehicles from the 13,508 units sold last year. Year-to-date, used vehicle sales were up 5.9 percent to 98,795 vehicles from the 93,307 units sold last year.

MINI Brand Sales
MINI USA reported sales of 4,326 automobiles, a decrease of 11.2 percent from the 4,872 cars sold last year. The drop in sales was affected by the Cash for Clunkers program that took place in July and August of 2009 and boosted sales volume. Excluding this one-off, the brand?s sales performance would have been ahead of last July. Year-to-date, MINI USA also reported sales of 25,279 automobiles, a slight decrease of 1.9 percent and nearly on par with the 25,757 units sold last year. In a segment that is down double digits year-to-date, the brand continued to gain market share.

So much for the "BMW is doomed because of the F10" theory. Seriously, though, it's nice to hear the F10 is off to a good start, although personally, it really doesn't affect me one way or the other. I actually like being the only driver of a F10 for miles around.

to buy a bmw for "exclusivity" is pure nonsense, first year production or not

I honestly think comparing sales from last year to this year is unfair, as they are 2 different models not to mention the demand for a style already out of production would be low. Perhaps comparing the first month sales of the e60 to the f10 first month sales is more appropriate.

In fairness, Pete, it's way too early to tell and it's way too early to declare victory... The first month was bound to be good due to buyers holding off for the new model (this is true for both LCI/facelift models as well as completely new model lines such as the F10). There will always be latent demand for the latest upcoming product that depresses demand for the legacy product. Also, the comparable year on year number for July 2010 vs July 2009 is tough to interpret as July 09 was hardly the crest of an economic boom... Time will tell. But until F10 sales data is available for an extended period, it's too early to say who was right and who was wrong... The real answer, of course, is that everyone will be right. F10 sales ought to be up simply due to the improving economy, and the enthusiasts will argue that the numbers might actually have been even better had BMW stayed the course and been a little more avant garde with its product...

i think a 10% increase is actually pretty bad news for a new model: considering the economic rebound and that it is a brand new design. it's below the BMW company average as well. i sure BMW is quite disappointed at those numbers.. the 1-series, x3, X5, 3-series, 6-series all had better percentages with little or no changes to the vehicle.

as a reference, the infiniti M sedans' sales numbers went up 75% (from 685 to 1196, june 10 vs 09 figues). the E-class sales jumped 74.2% in the month of August '09 when it was released.

Good numbers on the first year F10 means interested CPO buyers can get into an F10 earlier and easier.

Please find below my quick analysis of the posted sales figures.

First of all, consider the below analysis invalid if their is production limitation on the F10 that I don't know of (meaning that the manufacturing facilities can not supply all the customers demand in the US).

BMW brand sales scores 16.4% increase in July 10 compared to July 09 (that includes the 1 series and 6 series that are due to be changed in 2011, the 3 series that is due to be changed in 2012).

BMW F10 5-series debuted in 2010 scores 9.6% increase in July 10 compared to July 09 E60 sales.

What does this tell us?

I will leave you to comment on these figures.

Considering that the first production run of the F10 5's sold out, we'll have to wait to get meaningful numbers.

If that is the case, then we will have to wait and see .
