interesting reading...i still dont know how the sports cars will handle this, i know that Ferrari and Lambo are not going to trade functional design to meet this, i wonder if they'll be able to go along with fines or something ....i also think MB would have a hard time with this in terms of their marquee designs, such as the SLR, can you imagine that thing with a stub nose??!! i too wonder if since the US hasnt adopted these, if there will be an opportunity to design for US vs ROW....
I did some quick Googling to see about some of the issues you bring up about Ferrari and Lamborghini -- if you get a chance, take a look at the Lambo Gallardo LP560 -- it supposedly conforms to the pedestrian safety standards.
Also, I found the following article about a concept car from Lamborghini that also conforms to the standards:

Finally, just for fun, take a look at point number 2 in the following article from Edmunds.com:

I agree that it's a design challenge but I think you'll eventually see more creative ways of maintaining safety standards while preserving the design cues that we've come to expect. The problem is that right now, we're only at the beginning of the learning curve for these designers so they need time to refine things and learn from their designs.

Great reads, we shall have to wait and see how much more proficient the designers become in addressing this in future bmws so that they don't appear so snout up from..thanks!

Did you see on one of the articles I linked to (or at least I think I linked it) where they have airbags deploy to protect the pedestrian? I guess if I'm going to get hit by a car, I'd prefer to be hit by one with external airbags...
thats some strategy though!

If the final car looks like the rendering, I will take a pass and buy an Audi or a Porsche. The new design looks like many other cars on the road and is incredibly conservative. It is incredibly bland. I cannot believe the cultural shift at BMW away from leading edge design.
