I found this (yellow circle) in my trunk next to the amplifier. What is it?

I would guess hydraulic system for tail gate opening, but can someone confirm or deny that?

Here is it up close, and what is worrying me is the sticky fluid that has come out of the reservoir (marked with yellow):

The fluid is thick, sticky, very slightly greasy, does not smell.. is this hydraulic fluid? As you see, the reservoir is half-empty, is that ok?

Here is it again up close, in case someone can find the number somewhere. The name of he manufacturer is not readable on the pic, but it was something like Haebinger, or Hoebinger or similar:

Looks like a hydraulic unit for a tailgate opening system. I see a BMW 7-digit part number but can make it out. I tried:
7111667
7111687
7111867

Search for the BMW part number at:

I also found it, but:
- item 1 looks different from mine
- item 2 looks different as well, and mine has a cover above it (which I want to replace, but canot find a part number..)
- item 7 i cannot recognize at all.. except this is the cover, but the picture has nothing to do with the real thing really

pictures:

Seems that it's the compressor for the auto-trunk opener..

check the part number..

btw: My car is a 2011 E61, so the fluid seems ok in your pictures too..

Thanks Ivano

Good news that the fluid seems ok!

I could not locate the part number, but its not that important after all.. however I am surprised that after 7 years of production that Hoerbiger part number is still the same - this seems to be a pretty reliable system that these guys make.

I would suggest that BMW outsources the suspension compressor from ThyssenKrupp to them

Hi everybody!

The question arose in my head while reading this topic.

Is it possible to install an electric trunk opener using the above details if there was no such thing before?
Are there any wires connected to the compressor?

There is a picture in the manual showing how to adjust the trunk door's angle using I-drive.
Does that mean that I would have to take my car to the dealer to code it?
