Default Thule Sonic XXL cargo box on E61?

Has anyone tried fitting a Thule Sonic XXL cargo box on your E61? The Thule site is only listing up to the Sonic XL, so I'm guessing it could be an issue with the tailgate clearance. However, since we can set how high the tailgate goes, I'm wondering if the XXL would fit. Any feedback would be great.

Thanks!

Not sure if that box will fit or not but this is BMW's biggest Cargo Box (460)made by Thule that was on a E61. I have it listed for sale well below retail in excellent condition. Let me know if you are interested.

A member here (norsecarnut) has a 18 cu. foot Thule one I'm pretty sure. If you search for posts by him, you might find it.

Look up its dimensions and compare. You can have some overhang on the front no problem. For the rear, on later cars, you can set how high the tailgate will open also, in case you want it to open less than max. Maybe yours can as well.

EDIT - Sometimes I'm in a nice mood, so I did the search for you. Looks like he's running the 21 cu ft one too on his car:

Thanks for the replies. It looks like I'm going to go with the Sonic XL, which is 17 cu. ft., since it definitely fits without any clearance issues (according to Thule). Plus, I will be using it on a smaller vehicle down the road.

Thanks again for being in a nice mood!

503btv--did you buy the Sonic XL? Could you post a few pictures? I just bought a 2009 E61 and I'm shopping boxes. The Sonic XL is high on my list, so I'd like to see how it looks on the car.

Different variation, but I have Sonic Alpine (4" shorter than Sonic XXL) on mine.

With below setup (end of box being flush with rear hatch), I had to set the hatch to 2nd least opening.

With current setup (end of box being flush with shark fin antenna), I can open it all the way. Sorry, not the best picture.
