Good point Bob Kare. If you put on low profile relatively large tires, then I am sure it would be worse than runflats. Anyway, I must say the roads in Taiwan are not that great either and I would say that the ride is better than my X5 with non-sport suspension and regular 18 inch tires.

Again, once you get your first blowout and you keep driving without a need to pull over until you get to the tire plugging place, then you will see that the future is for runflats.

Not if you live in the UK... the quality of most of our roads is too abysmal.

this is really one reason why Audi are testing their cars in the UK !!

RFT seem all a matter of personal taste with clear advantage AND disadvantages.

Having both Dunlops RFT under our Bimmer (18") and Mini Cooper S Works (17") my verdict is that I would still opt for RFT but NOT Dunlops ! They are famous for their noise - especially when cold - and their harsh ride. Also 18" is 1" too much for me. Both our new 325i and 130i definitely get 17"

I believe it all comes down to what your prior experience is, and what expectations you have.
You cannot order a M-spec car with low profile 18" tyres without expecting direct feed back from tyres/suspension. If its comfort you are after then go for 16" and non M-spec.

To me the M-spec suspension and 18" feels perfect.

That's exactly what I was wondering -- prior experience and expectations. Right now I have an E36 M3 with low profile tires, and sure, I do feel a lot of the road coming through, but wouldn't have it any other way. I'm about to place an order for a 530xiT and so far have not been able to find one with runflats here in California. Will test drive a regular 530i with runflats instead.

Having just replaced Bridgestone RE050's with Goodyear GS D3's the difference is considerable.
The ride is much smoother, without any real loss of feel from the road. There is a differnce between feel and jarring !
They also seem to stay in contact with the road better through bends, the RE050's RFt's were skittish and skipped when hitting drain covers and imperfections.
I run 225/50 /17's so how RFT's must feel on lower profiles I can only guess.
