I test drove the 525d Automatic m-sport E60 (not E61) at the weekend. I was really very impressed with the speed of the Automatic (not Sport-Automatic) when used in manual mode -- it really does change gear instantly and is a HUGE improvement over the last generation automatic. 
IMHO the 3 litre engine with the auto fits the 5er driving experience much better than the 2 litre diesel I have at the moment -- it was just all so much more effortless and refined, which is what the 5er is about with normal driving. The 2 litre diesel will accelerate nearly as quick, but you need to really work it through the gears and keep it in the 2000-4000 rev range, which means lots of gear changing -- probably more of a 3er style of driving 
The main plus point for me was pulling away from a stand still; the 525dA always had power there straight away and no (significant) lag. The 520d (163ps version) really needs to be revved to at least 1800 to ensure you have power when you pull off -- I have been in a number of situtations where I got this wrong and found myself with a big turbo lag at around 1300rpm and having to wait a couple of seconds until it came -- that is bad when you are pulling out on to a busy street!!
So my choice of engine is made; 525dA it is
(A 530d or 535d is beyond my co. car budget, especially with all the options I need to have as well)
OK, that was nothing to do with roof rails, so to bring it back to the original thread I posted, I have now decided to go for NO roof rails and with Jet Black. I only keep the cars a maximum of 3 years and wash it every week, so Jet Black should hold up well during the time I have the car. Its a company car, so I do not need to worry about what it looks like when it goes back.

Personally I like my roof rails. But I do find it a pitty that when the vent of my panoramic room is set to tilt end the two panels are open, you can hardly see it from the outside.
