My Ride: Jan 2006 E63 650i Sport . Options: Sport version (includes: sport-seats, sport-suspension, M-Sport steering wheel, Anthracite headliner, Shaddow Line), Saphire Black, Black Dakota Leather, Anthracite Maple Wood trim, Steptronic Auto, Xenons, NAV-Professional with Voice Control, TV, CD-Changer, Bluetooth, Logic7, Head-up Display, Comfort Access, Seat Heating front, Auto Dimming & Folding Mirrors, Extended Auto Air Conditioning, PDC. . Mods: Spacers 5mm front & 15mm rear . Wheels: 20" Alpina Softline (Classic) with Dunlop Sport Maxx non-RFT (255/35/20 & 285/30/20)
Default

Before year-end I may be ordering a 525d M-Sport E61 touring in Jet Black, Natural Brown leather, Black high gloss trim, rear tinted windows and running on 19s (probably M166) -- if I take this route, it would replace my current E60 early next year.

I've decided on the colours, but am still not sure about the Roof Rails? Whenever I see a touring without the roof rails, it really catches my eye. I find it looks slick and more purposeful (especially on the m-sport), but at the same time it also looks as though something is missing!

I have no concerns about the practicality side of things, because I know you can get a normal roof rack from BMW if you really need to put something on the roof -- e.g. ski-box. So its just to do with the cosmetics.

So please help me out here -- what do you think, with or without roof rails on an E61 m-sport...?

Thanks

I'd have to agree with you that the absence of roof rails definitely makes you do a double take, but also leaves something to be visually desired. My vote goes for no rails though!

servus xBMWx,

of course no roof rails!!! they are spot ugly - if they were as flat as the m-packet ones for the new X5, then yes, but the ones they have for the e61 are just dead ugly.

as for 19" on a touring - the combination you are looking for is my winter setup from my signature, except my car is carbon black...

greetinz

ps. if we share the 500-600 eur i need to have my roof rails removed, then i can show you pics of a e61 with 19" m packet without roof rails

Yep ! RAILS... that's what makes it a touring...

Without the rails I feel that it's incomplete.

I don't know if once you have the rails, you can also take them off ? That might be a solution...

OF COURSE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING : follow your own taste.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm also thinking that with 19s and no rails, it would make the car look wider and sportier. With rails on the top, it somehow stretches the height / dimensions of the car. I also agree with RSYED's comment of the size of the rails -- they stand out a lot and are in a matt finish, whereas the rest of the car has a shiny finish.

Hmm, still feeling a little here!

I like the the look of non railed touring cars but it is part of the "look " , will it impact future trade in value ? Good Luck

Partly the reason why I in the end opted to let the rails stay on (the're part of the "Advantage" package in Sweden which is more or less mandatory). Also, that with a family of four sooner or later I will be using the extra space on the roof.

But visually I vote "off"!

i can definitely agree to that and also confirm that - the car of my former boss (535d touring without) looked sportier and compared to mine, looked lower than mine... both with 19", both m-packet etc... the relings really stretch the car in the height...

Its a company car, so not my problem -- and it does not impact the leasing price
