ok great, thanks Gman.
so the black plastic roller has a magnet ... can you see the magnet on the flat side of the roller, or is it hidden, inside the roller, or even part of the roller rod ?? ... wondering if there is visual way to confirm, for an ebay purchase.
nothing magetic on the right side of mine sadly.

51479130667 repair kit would be a solution ... however i took a magnet salvaged from old laptop hard drive and dremelled it into a small circle the same size as the roller and superglued it on the end. voila. first try was too small - didn't always retract. cover now snaps open to the top of the guides, closes slowly afterwards and then resets the mechanism ready for the next tailgate/window opening.
strange that this cover otherwise fits, has the rollers, despite being carried over from a 99 E39 528iT.

My Ride: e61 M5 SMG Touring
e61 M5 Monaco with boot cover not pulling down issue
Mine stopped working last year. It flummoxed my INDY - they said there were no errors when scanned. I did check with ISTA and no errors. It went in the garage for winter. The first warm sunny day of spring prompted me to look again.
I stripped the motor and tube assembly today. Undoing the three screws to look inside and all looked good. Broking down the motor works fine, drawing 1.6 amps initially settling to 1.5 amps both ways (gear body detached from both cables). So, I reassembled and refitted with cable ties where missing. Also repairing the threshold trim with 'JB Plastic Weld' as all four lugs under the Philips screws had fatigue failed and repairing the trim pieces either side which also had many cracks in. I am less than impressed with BMW plastic.
After reassembly, it still did not pull down, pops up fine. Seeing a sensor top tight and the four terminals on the motor I reasoned there must be a control module. Real OEM calls up 61357188110 and 61359273584. I Google LCPA module problems and find this helpful thread.
I guess these are under the boot floor somewhere. Someone mentioned a repair kit 51479130667, so I might be missing a magnet? However, my current theory is the control module threw a wobbly when it couldn't close one day (the day after being in dealer for the battery cable recall.) So I need to look more closely at ISTA for a triggering action or test procedure for this module. I remember using INPA to trigger the active seat bolsters (well the passenger triggered, and stripping the driver seatback revealed the power connector had become detached from the active bolster motor! That saved me paying some seat specialist £2,000.) Not so familiar with ISTA, but this thread has shown there is a common pattern with these and given me some inspiration and hope. Fingers crossed.

If you have ISTA, definitely start there. Get to the KGM tests, there's one to trigger the roll cover down/up. If it activates, you know the module is good. My current theory is that the guides get "dry" so when the cover pops up, it doesn't make it 100% of the way up for the magnet to trigger the switch. After that, it's not going to motor up or down anymore. I got my roll cover working, but it would not make it all the way up on occasion. I hit the guides with white lithium and it's worked flawlessly ever since (famous last words, I know!)

Well When checking fuses for mirrors i Pulled fuse 29 and all hell broke loose, got everything working again exept for whats mentioned in this thread.
I believe it got ereased from my system.
How does When check that?
Motor etc works flawless
Got power at The red/white wire terminal 7
It all went South after i got loads of codes after the fuse i Pulled.
Looks fine.. Now what?

Will do once i get my hands on a laptop.
I used a multimeter and connected it to red green, black blir from the module and shut and opened the trunk. No power. There is do power to the module and the red white wire. So i guess its not sending the signal.
The tabs Work but not slide.
