Replacing amp in 2010 e61 w/676 hifi (hopefully rolling up 2 decades of posts :)
Reluctantly, I am ready to launch my yet-another-e61-audio upgrade post. I'll update this post as I progress. That said, please point me to any references I've missed. I've studied most posts from the last decade on the subject. This will be model year 2010 specific. I've installed dozens of DIY aftermarket audio systems dating back to the 80s. So, I'll try to keep it to what's new or less documented for the 2010 e6x.
Goals (as budget and time allow):
1. replace 676 amp with JL (etc) non-bmw amplifier; weigh improvement with factory speakers
2. replace factory speakers
3. (maybe) add rear passenger door and center dash speakers, sound dampening/dynamat (even needed?)
4. evaluate, replace factory sub location; box in rear cargo area (vs traveling storage space)
TODO:
- find 2010 e61 wire diagram--for the 676 amplifier (no posts I've found use similar wire colors; no technic harness, I've read no reason why)
- are 2010 inputs line or speaker level?
- remove 676 amp and useless sat box
Aside from the normal car audio install stuff, here's what's unique to my 2010 e61. I would absolutely love a click-in harness but all research points to likely piggy-back splices. This is the harness in the left rear compartment:
This is the 676 harness on my 2010 e61.
The wires out of that harness.
Shamelessly stolen photo of a 676 amp which matches what I unplugged this harness from. Left rear compartment easily visible without removing any screws. Left rear compartment. Sat unit middle, 676 amp to the right unplugged.
