My Ride: 2006 525d M-sport,19" staggered style 95 wheels,custom quad exhaust with modified reiger rear bumper insert,LCI front and rear lights,stage 2 custom remap, DPF removed, cat removed
This might sound like a silly question to you guys,but i'm new to the world of bmw's and have read threads were people talk about re programming the car to change something or make it do something different.
My question is who/what sort of place will do this? In uk

Mikethepanel, I think you need to define the "something" part a little bit more precise for us to help you... but in principle you can always opt for places who do engine tuning.

The first thing i was thinking was reprogramming DRL to be just on the AE's

That sort of coding work is done for sure, I know lots of people do it on the E90 platform, so I can't imagine it's not done on our cars. Just a matter of finding someone. Check on the E60 forums too, and the local UK forum, if there is one here.

I also heard from my local indipendant that the car could do with "updating"
Has anyone any idea what this means and is it worth doing?
