I think the problem centres around the tilt function. Trouble is that if you miss the button you might accidentally tilt it rather than slide it!

Gents,

My E61, dated May 2005, also had problems with the pano roof.
After cleaning and greasing with white grease it was ok for a while but than the jamming started again.

I figured out the problem and simply disabled the rear sunroof mechanism. (so the rear roof cannot tilt anymore).
By doing this modification the whole mechanism is working much better now, as it does not have to pull or push the rear roof.
The front roof does everything: tilting and sliding.

If you are interested, send me a mail so I will explain.

Hello everybody,

I cleaned the roof and had it re - intialised and it works fine again!
So luckily no new roof was necessary for me!

I guess the new roof (after 10/2005) is indeed an improvement ?!
The people who have proplems with there pana roof can they confirm they have a E61 pre 10/2005?

THX again for all your reactions!

What exactly did you clean? I only have access to the side rails, while the big glass is opened, and they are not the problem I guess.
Were you able to access and clean the tilt mechanism of the rear piece?

Mine is 09/2004

I am not an expert so I did not start to remove things. I opened the roof completely and cleaned everything I could reach.
The most important thing was the re - initialisation I guess.

My wife opened the roof once, and then we had a heck of a time to get it closed again.

I have never tried to open it again since that initial experience.

You mean you never use it? Wow! I use my quite a lot (the tilt function especially). And yes, I get punished by having to drive to the garage to get it adjusted again. Which they seem to be unable to do correctly.

We don't use it in any "open" position. But the inner roof is always open.

Last summer when we had the E60 "meet" in Germany, I was shocked to see xBMWx sticking his arm through his sunroof to point up to some sky divers!

My wife asked, "how did he do that?" Oh well.

Let me guess. You replied:
"It's magic, my dear. That's why we drive a BMW"
