I just changed my rear rotors and brake pads. Rotors are stock and the brake pads are Cool Carbon. It was my first time. Right wheel was a problem. Pads came off easy but the rotor got hung up on the parking brake shoes. After a half hour of hammering I decided to leave the old rotor on, change the pads, and take it to my mechanic to get the rotor off which cost about $50. Right side was fairly easy, took about 1.5 hrs. Whoever did it last didn't put anti seize on the parts. You need a good floor jack and jack stands.
Check out bavauto.com. There's a lot of how to info on they're website.

Any other options out there that people have installed on their AWD E61s? I'm running stock 17s in the winter and looking to go to 18's for summer tires [as sweet as 19's look, think the ride would be too harsh, especially on New York City roads], so rotors would need to fit in 17 inch rims.
You are correct, I didn't get the answer I was looking for. Seems the 2wd cars have options to upgrade and 4wd is rather limited. Maybe just a lack of 4wd owners interested in brake upgrades. I have a earlier BMW with upgraded brakes with oem parts and what a pleasure they are. Virtually no fear when I need to stop. I've actually had to let up on my braking effort to prevent getting rear ended. Thanks for bringing this back, maybe will renew interest.

I wanted to resurrect this thread in hopes of getting some more answers. I need to replace the brakes on my 2006 E61 and was hoping to get larger rotors. I still have the stock 17" wheels, so I need something to fit inside those.

From what I can tell, the 530xi, 535xi and 530i models share the same 324mm diameter rotors in the front. However, the 535i, 545i, and 550i models have the larger 348mm diameter rotors in the front. Does anybody know if those larger rotors will fit on our 530xi/535xi cars? Also, would I need the 535i front calipers if I were to get those rotors?

The rotors will fit, but you'll need the calipers to go along with them.

Did the rear offsets change with the hub replacement? Also do you have the part number used on the rear hubs?

Yes it did, to compensate I Bought 20mm spacers and then just fitted a stud kit on all 4 corners.

I'm in the same boat. Would love to keep 17" wheels, but would love a brake upgrade.

Did some research on realoem, none of the parts are the same between the 550i and 535xi.

With people upgrading to m5 brakes, the consensus is that the front brakes are a direct swap. However, both Ocean Road and Evan had to change rear hubs need to m5 version.

After doing more research, it seems as if rear hubs for either m5 or 550 brakes can use any rear hub for RWD e60/e61.

Am I missing something?
