I did have to use scotch brite to get the gasket residue off of the face of the oil cooler, and it obviously scored the metal, which seemed bad to my eyes, but it seems like most people do it this way, but also this is the most pervasive oil leak on this engine, so maybe everyone is doing it wrong... is reinzosil the answer?

"Scotch brite" can mean a whole lotta different things. It comes in some very rough "grit" levels that could leave deep scratches. But most of the more common abrasive levels won't leave any scratches deep enough to cause an oil leak. The green Scotch Brite pads that I keep in my garage might leave a slight "swirl mark" on the face of the oil cooler mating surface, but there's no way that would ever cause a leak.
