My dear Lemon Car has been in 7 times, which makes it a little more fault prone than the Alfa 156 I had for three lovely years btw 1998-2001. New high score, in other words.

Ohh, I miss my E46 330i Touring 2003. Perfect car for 2 years and 91000 kms. Why did I sell that car?!?
Ditto the 330i my 530d has been in the garage for more repairs in 5 months that the 330i did in 5 years. Are they made by the same company?

Much the same experience with my Oct 04 E61 vs my May 99 E46 328i. Faults on the E61 (bought when it was 3 years old):

nav system crash that required SW reload
click in steering requiring new upper column
steering click returned requiring new lower column
leaking water/oil heat exchanger - replaced
DVD drive sounding like a woodpecker - replaced
faulty self leveling pump - replaced
perished vacuum hose to turbo resulting in non-actuation of small turbo - replaced

Here's my service history

- PDC sensor burned out and fried the whole system - replaced under warranty
- Windshield Wipers would not stop in the "off" position - replaced the module under warranty
- Tire Noise between 130 - 140km/h (still pending)
- Alternator making whining noises (still pending - dealer doesn't want to admit that its abnormal)
- Front Seats Squeeking after 8,000km - fixed under warranty
- Clutch self adjusted and my clutch pedal went numb - dealer said its normal, but the problem eventually went away
- Picked up a nail in right rear - got a free tire from BMW (wear and tear warranty)

2. full car re-program - fule pump error messages
I had the same fuel pump error message with my 525D M Sport when the car was less than 2 weeks old back in April 2008.The dealer kept it in overnight and uploaded a revised programme from BMW in Germany and I have had no problem since - touch wood.

We have had our 2004 530D since june last year, so far it has had the following:

Starter motor
Panoramic Roof
Both folding mirror motors
Altenator
Glow Plug
Glow plug control unit
Remote locking control unit
Cup holder
Numerous Reprograms

Going in tommorow for

main thermostat
Instrument binacle
oil leak

I cant remember how many visits, but it is a lot as not all problems fixed 1st time

Think I have a lemon!, it only has 50k on

Without a warranty I would have spent a hell of a lot of money, even mirror motors were about ?300 each!

Anybody on here ran a 3 series touring? If so what did you think?
We are thinking of changing to a 2006 onwards 330/335d - any known issues as the E61 seems to have loads of common faults when you start searching and ours seems to have had every single one and then some

Stephen
I think we have similar cars my 530d E61.

- Last owner had Sunroof replaced under warranty.
- Main therm
- Active steering errors - reprogramed
- Self levelling errors - cleared
- Terrible economy now resolved
- Sat Nav crashes
- Squeaky steering
- Glow plug errors in computer (ignored)
- Parking sensors in computer (ignored)

If I look through the receipts its regularly requires money spending on it for minor errors and sensor problems. I saw in What Car they were described as being like 3 series but to me it seems like it was made by another company.

Battery replacement ... S/W Progman update ... nothing else < 27K miles
An update:

At service inspection my dealer replaced the sunroof seal when I reported wind noise with the glass closed but the interior cover in the open position. No argument ... no push back - just good service with a smile.

Much quieter ...

Turnersville NJ BMW ... These guys are really great to visit. And that has nothing to do with the good coffee and donuts
