Hello Everyone,
I was wandering if anyone has experienced similar problems or have any ideas on what is going wrong.
Few days ago I bought used bmw 525d se, auto, registered on July 2005, on 87K miles. I have reset the fuel consumption gauge and I get 17-18 mpg urban drive. According to the spec urban fuel consumption should be around 30-31 mpg. Since then I have reset the fuel consumption several times, but I get similar figures - almost half of what the official figures are. I have reset the auto gearbox, checked the tyre pressure is correct, but the results were the same. There are no any signs of malfunction, no check errors etc.. All services were done by bmw and the last service was done just 6 months ago, so air filter should have been changed etc.
Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Cheers for your time in reading.

Where are located? If you're in the UK check your idrive settings to ensure that you're set to imperial gallons and not US gallons. Have you checked the reported fuel consumption against the calulated consumption (i.e. miles between fill-up divided by gallons)?

Thanks for you answer, I am located in UK. I have checked the Idrive it is in imperial gallons. Just to make sure the conversion is not the issue I have set it to L/100km and I get more than 16l per 100 km. Haven't done the full manual check, but it is consuming the same and more than my old 520i E39 , which used to do 20-21 mpg petrol.

hi there, i wouldnt take to much notice of the official mpg stated for your car...I have a 2005 525D SE E61 manual with 75000 miles on the clock and I average around 22-25 around town combined around 35-38 and on a run 40-45mpg on a good run.. Far Short of Bmw Figures and I am really light footed.. before the warranty expired it was looked at by Irvine Bmw who said that my figures were right for the car.... My old 2003 E39 525D M Sport would do 30-34 around town 40-45 combined and 55 -58 mpg on a run.. so much for newer more fuel efficient engines!!!!!!

Not sure if it helps, but my '05 525 m e61 auto has stuck to 34.4mpg average for the last 25,000 miles. That is a mixture of motorway, 25 mile 'a' road commute with traffic and general usage.

I can't seem to get it any higher no matter how much try, but I can make it drop very easily without trying!!!

Good luck.

Cheers

Just an update. I had the car checked, but there was nothing wrong with it. The air filter was dirty, so I had it changed and the fuel efficiency have improved- it is a bit early to know the exact figure, but on the way back from the garage it jumped from 18mpg to 21-22 mpg(this is only urban drive).

are those values from the trip computer, or did you calculate this after refueling?
car's computer values can differ sometime, but there is a way to enter a correction value in the hidden menu if this is the case.

I get 8.5L/100 KM for the first 6000 KM I made in my 2004 525D E61. Mostly highway stuff in the netherlands (and 1000 KM fast driving in germany ).

But you can checkout this german site for some more info on other combinations. Some people keep their fuel consumption records over there for a wide variety of cars. Heck, you can do it yourself to ;-))

good luck!

My 530d is getting around 3,9-4,2 l/100km on the run...

and around the eights in town.... that is 7,8-8,4 l/100km in town..

I beleive the 525d should be similar, i would have it checked at the nearest BMW Service, and have them read the codes...

I bet your MAF is bad... does it smoke bad, or have less power than normal ?
