Hi,

We have just purchased a BMW 5 Series 520D. The engine however seems to be quite noisy as per the video below. The dealer suggests this noise is normal but we are not convinced.

There seems to be quite a loud ticking noise from the engine as below. Is this normal do you think?

Thanks

If it sounds the same in the flesh as on the MP4 then something's not right.

What year, mileage and main dealer or independent?

It sounds pretty much the same as per the MP4. Its done 52k, full dealer service history registered in 2007. Last service just before purchase at the same 52k.

Dealer is claiming this is how a "diesel sounds" (as our last car was petrol)

We were thinking it is perhaps timing or valve clearances, but the noise doesnt increase with revs, which rules that out?

BMW dealer or independent dealer purchased?

Did it sound that way from the first moment you heard/drove it or has it developed over time?

Doesn't sound like it's the motor...Sounds like a loose clamp or pulley rattling against something...

It didn't sound as noisy when test driving, after a few days of use the noise has got louder. Its hard to identify where its coming from under the bonnet.

I guess we'll just need to keep pushing the dealership to investigate.

I'm experiencing the same type of ticking as well. I have no idea where it is coming from. I'm still investigating. I might have to take it into the dealer.

March 15 2012 purchased 2012 BMW 535i with active drive - have same ticking, knocking noise as discribed in this forum. I am on my second trip to dealer - first trip was told that the engine noise was "normal" and was the injectors cycling. Sat inside another 535i and it did not have the same noise etc. Not a teckie but I can tell when in the car that this noise is not normal. Dealer gave me loaner 2012 535i and that one runs great - no noise, engine quiet etc. I have asked that a BMW north america rep also review this case. Will let you know.

2007 530xi N53, somewhat similar sound, valve lifters, had mine fixed, I ignored it initially but my wife complained she could hear it a lot when the car was cold.

I dont think it applies to you but I found this similar to ours:
