I recently took ours in to an independent as the heated screen was no longer working. THe wiper also was problematic. While it would work, there was often a weird 'click' noise and the wiper would stick about halfway through the sweep before continuing as normal.
We did have the rear screen replaced last year, but by the time we realised there was a problem the 1 year warranty on the work had run out. And Auto Windscreens just denied that it was them that caused the fault. Luckily it cost an hour's labour (from indy) to fix, so was repaired for about £70.

See my recent post about rear wiper problems. Sounds like you had a similar problem with the sprung drive pin not engaging properly leading to erratic operation.
