I think I've seen them somewhere, back in March 2007. (And I bet Bangle & Co designed them already in 2003, when the E60/61 were introduced).

I just wonder what happened to Mercedes-Benz in the last 15 years. Design-wise they are just sooo hopeless. A disappointment really, given all the heritage of the brand.

There was no LCI E39. LCI was used with the introduction of ED.

The ML lights resemble to 90% the E61 LCI lights. The only difference are the upper two LED rods, which are missing on the E61.

The previous ML in its facelift form had very a interesting interpretation of the LED theme in its rear lights - there was a group of rods pointing in the driving direction, and from the rear you could only see them as LED points. This was original (different from BMW (horizontal rods) and Audi (points)) and looked good. See this pis, although its not very clear here:

With the latest ML iteration however, MB just took the shortcut and copied this:

I find it even more disturbing, as throughout history (70s, 80s, 90s), the design feature of MB rear lights always were the horizontal lines. However, in the 2000s, they were so slow that they could not implement this distinctive feature using the LED technology, and BMW did it instead of them. In such a successful way that MB is now copying it.
