I am paying less than ?44 for a spec'd E61 535d sport so either you are being a bit unfair or you bought before the discounts were launched. I copped it with my E39 when the E60/61 arrived, buyers of SEs will take a hit now as the Sport is the main seller - the dealers are seeing to that, I was advised in no uncertain terms that the SE would be a bad buy now.

Overall I have to agree that the depreciation has hit harder than I expected, but how many ?40k cars really do keep their value? (and don't say the E class, that appears to be another myth).

Every one I buy I swear will be the last...
My friend had the E claa and he lost ?20 + in 2 years and he purchased an ex demo so the E is no better.
We purchased one of the first E61's in the country but we did get ?2k off the list price but I had ?8k's worth of extras including the service pack which lost all the money it cost when I sold it.

That's pretty much my experience too.

Getting one of the first can be a good move if the model takes off, I was late to the E39 and paid the price.

Came close to having the new 330D instead of a 5 but, while fun to play with, I decided the 5 was a better all round mile muncher. Expensive too as there are no 'packs' yet so every option is charged.

Just an update , have now been offered ?34500 from 1 dealer and ?35000 from another . All of them wanted to offer ?31000 at first but it seems my spec has helped . So i have lost ? 8500 in 9 months and 20,000 miles . Still a big hit but thats it for me, once ive sold it aim buying a used E90 330i for work and a used 997s and i can start all over again
The M5 i would not touch right nowafter all this as its a ticking time bomb for my money

I was going to change my 535d Sport Touring for a 320d touring and get either an M5 or another 997s as a weekend car. Well i was until the salesman came back to me an offered ?31000 against the new shape 320D ( ex Demo ). My car has done only 20000 on a 05 and just had new tyres all round and a service plus it has Sunroof , HUD, Media ,Xexons etc.......
I told him basically to get stuffed , and he rang me today and offered ?1800 more ( still told him to get stuffed) .
I went on Glass Guide website and paid ?2.95 to find out what the dealer's should be asking for my car , it says ?36,750 if in A1 and tyres are good, as mine is .

Its totally put me off from buying an M5 until they 2 have lost a shed load !
I got nearly ?4500 off the retail price when i bought this car which i thought was a good deal at the time.
Selling a car so quick will always lose you lots of cash. The depreciation on the E60/1 is good over 3/4 years but in the first year you lose ?8k from the retail of ?42k. The following years you'll only lose about ?4k per year. (Retained about 60% after 3 years, average mileage)

These would be retail prices so you'd expect the dealer to offer about ?2-3k less.

For the options, most of them will be worth ZERO! Auto (standard on 535d) & Leather are 'demanded' in this sector but I'm afraid that most other options only help to ease of selling/guarantee of estimated price. (My suspicion is that you will be knocked down if you don't have certain options!)

However, 20k miles on an 05 plate is quite high (Even for a diesel! 12k guide average) - you will be knocked for this a bit...

A more realistic price would be ?34k as trade in. The trouble is that they will would be selling the car at ?36k-ish and I think it would take a while to shift! (So they have to factor in a potential ?300/month loss...)

We all know it but best to buy a nicely loaded 1 year-old motor... Of course the other option is to sell privately, but few people will part with ?35k of 'cash'.

Two dealers have told me the most popular options now are NAV + Phone. I m sure leather is there but most people take it as standard that the car will have it . The ?35000 price i got in the end was from a dealer buying my car not a PX.

So my 2 cents to this topic.

was at the dealer yesterday to part exchange my 530d (fully loaded) for another BMW (either 535d or 330d) - the car is 10 months old and has 16000 km on it. New list price of the car is about 72000 EUR (48000 EUR + 24000 EUR extras), and now guys, hold on to your seats - they offered me 36000 EUR! I immediately wrote to the owner of the dealer and told him that his employees are wasting my time, he wrote back with a new offer: 42000 EUR - that is 42% after 10 months and 16000 km...

something for all of us to think about...

greetings from austria

rumman

Joker - if you got ?35k in a straight sale to a dealer I think you did bloody well. Your new car would have cost approx ?45k and given you can now readily get 10% off a new car its a very good result for you. The dealer will sticker it at ?38k and settle at ?37k approx I reckon.

I have been noticing the same here recently as I've started to look at selling.

I don't think 10% discount is common here. Just seems like the 535d is depreciating faster than expected.
