Yeah exactly...would go for the standard transparent 5 mm. No need for 12V leds...just use the resistors 74 for the 4 in series and 142 ohm fro 2 in series. see scheme in earlier post

Nice DIY. Did you buy the 5V or the 12V version of the LEDs?

How did you glue the plastic back together? Is it still holding strong with no moisture buildup inside?
