I have just ordered a 530 D saloon. My brother had a 5 er but now has twins so wants a Touring but can only have the base petrol engine (lives in Greece - no diesel). Will he be happy with the base petrol in the Touring of should he go for a smaller more powerful Audi Avant A4

what is the base petrol???? 2 liter 520i????
if so he should be fine.... Audi petrol engines are not as good as BMW.... in fact BMW's petrol engines are probably the best those days....
the 520i will do good in slow Greece traffic....
the A4 Avant with 1.8 Turbo is maybe more powerfull due to the turbo but the car is soooooooooo small compared to the E60.
I had the A4 and it is definitely NOT a family car unless your kids are just babies
the 5er serie E60 is a one class higher in all aspects including size.... remember !

you should talk to member nicke60gre here. he is from greece and has the base 520i petrol

hope this helps

Thanks fot that. The base is a 2.5 litre 177HP which looks reasonable. He had an old E60 with the less powerful 520 engine previously. I agree about the class- I am up grading from my A4 to E60 in 6 weeks (saloon). My A4 felt like a toy after testing E60

I have owned a 523i M Touring now for just over 2 weeks, and its plenty powerful enough. He wont be dissappointed at all - he'll be able to make the same conclusion on a short test drive.

523i is a nice car and quick enough.

Compared to bigger engines you notice the difference in power when you check for it. Otherwise the engine is smooth, quiet and powerful enough.

In normal traffic there is hardly a difference to the bigger petrol engines.

... otherwise - can't compare an A4 to a E61 - can you ?

If theres one thing bmw never seem able to get right it sticking the right badge on the car.

ie

520i = 2.2l
523i = 2.5l
525i = 2.5l + more power

Why change the habit of a lifetime :'(
