Hold on a moment, how can a 550i weigh the exact same as a 535D?? if a 535D is 50KG heavier than the 530D then surely that V8 lump must be at least 70kg's heavier than the Straight Six Diesel.
Take it up with BMW - I only work here :

http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/pricesandspecif...t-bmwuk,00.html

Actually, I think it's cause the 535d is based on the older 530d engine (the one I have) plus some extra weight for turbo gubbins.

The new 530d engine is all aluminium so the current model is a LOT lighter.

25kg... Nice but not huge

Would bring 0-60 down by about 0.1s... (With 218PS engine) But it becomes 0.5s with the 231PS engine and the weight savings...

Manual 530d = 1590kg

Auto 530d = 1665kg

535d is only auto and 1735kg

Looking at this again significant factor in the weight difference is the tranny.

'new' Manual 530d

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 231
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1590
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 147.62
0 - 60 (Secs) : 7.14
0 - 100 (Secs) : 18.99
60 - 100 (Secs) : 11.85
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 15.51
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 90.37
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 15.41
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 91.38

Is that still the case for diesels, I'm not sure that with the 6 speed box in the 530d the best shiftpoint is at the redline as you would normally expect.

It REALLY pulls at around 2000rpm and doesn't feel significantly faster higher in the rev range, especially at the limit where it just makes lot's of 'noise', but produces not much more go.....
really? i dont know. I cant quite compare the 530d as its been chipped. i do have a x5 3.0d though, and that pulls stongest at around 3000rpm... all the way until 4200rpm, and there you go.

535d is better but runs out of stream at around 4700rpm. After that its pointless

BTW we have timed the new 530d with some nice slics at 6.79 once, second time was 6.86.... from 0-62.5

Surely that's covered by the 535d? Unless they want to tag the 'new' 535d as 540d to distinguish it?
v8 bi-turbo diesels are a different thing. The e420 cdi is in a different league. only 315bhp but 700nm at around 1600rpm. If it sells well , bmw will offer a v8 diesel block for the e60. But as car magazine said , that would be around 2009

535d is one heavy **

530d is 1665Kg irregardless of the box..

the BHP per tonne is:

535d: 156.78
530d: 139.74

not that big a diffence

btw look at the difference from 100-200km/h in 550i and 535d DMS... should be around 2.5seconds

Sadly - you could be right

I'm thinking of a DMS job though... they reckon it's go to 260hp (from 218) and up to approx 570nm.

I plugged this into this calculator:

http://www.letstorquebhp.com/calculator.asp

530d + DMS

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 260
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1685
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 156.78
0 - 60 (Secs) : 6.77
0 - 100 (Secs) : 17.33
60 - 100 (Secs) : 10.56
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 15.11
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 93.36
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 15.01
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 94.41

535d

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 272
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1735
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 159.29
0 - 60 (Secs) : 6.68
0 - 100 (Secs) : 16.87
60 - 100 (Secs) : 10.19
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 15.00
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 94.30
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.90
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 95.36

What do you think ?
I think you should do it, and i also think this way you already got yourself a "535d" without the whole rev band thingie but with the performance of a 535d and the ummmpf because of the single turbo, that the 535d can't achive. I mean it's sometimes special to see your foot palnted into the throttle at 1000rpm or so and so soon as you hit 2000 all the hell brakes loose, and you get pushed in the chair. This thing is gone in the 535d, it now feels more like a supercharged merc Kidding...

I guess so. Even more low-down torque! The only issue I'd say is the extra weight up front hurting the handling?

It's tempting ... at the moment I'm not completely sure I'm happy with the 530d as is - I'm enjoying it, but also missing the chuckability of my e46 coupe.

I can't quite decide between the following:

1. Trade in for something smaller / more sporty

Possibilities:

M3 (secondhand only - and a big worry in regard to maintenance costs - but a dream car for many years)

New 330ci or 330i touring (to get a nice 3 months warranty.

Downside re the M3 and coupe is obviously that the e90 version is on it's way and it will start to look dated quickly.

2. Get a 535d now - (this is going to be financialy very painful)

3. Get it dms'd (reasonably cheap fix) keep it for 12 months then look at swapping for a new e90 330i coupe or possibily still an e46 330i (or M3 - which my heart wants and my head says no to).

What would you do?

4.4 seconds...hmmmm... and I thought 535D is faster than Saab 9-5 Aero I used to have.

It seems that Saab Aeros are faster when it comes to overtaking. I don't know what 80-120km/h figures are for standard 9-5 Aero, but modified Saab Aeros do 80-120kmh in less than 4 seconds. 3.6 sec is the best I found.
